Deveny on the grand final

It's the Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final today. It's a contest which showcases masculine athleticism at the highest level and it's a longstanding part of local culture. And yet this is what feminist Catherine Deveny chose as her grand final day tweet:
Men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men and none openly gay.

At first I thought I shouldn't post on this. Deveny likes to act the part of the provocative leftist and I don't want to rise always to the bait. But then it struck me that her attitude is not all that different from the way that feminists respond, say, to the armed services. If twitter had been popular 10 or 15 years ago, it's not hard to imagine someone like Hilary Clinton having tweeted about the U.S. armed services:
Men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men and none openly gay.

The feminist focus is not on the larger purpose of the institution and it's relation to masculine endeavour and strengths, but on transformation along gender and sexual lines.

Most people see a great mark
Catherine Deveny sees too many men

  1. So places full of men are gay? Thank you very much feminists.

  2. This reminds me of the people who boast that they have many gay friends. This can only mean (a) they have many, many, many friends, (b) gays are being run ragged with social invitations, (c) they are gay, (d) they are lying. If I invite 100 random people to a party, 2-3 would likely be homosexual, 1-2 identifiably "gay." And the truth is, both of the gay men would likely prefer to go to a party where gays make up something like 70% of the party. Take the small size of the homosexual population, add the tendency of that population to cluster and congregate, and you will understand why gay men are very scarce outside those places where they are very abundant. There just aren't enough gay men to go 'round!

  3. This is off topic for this pose, but appropriate for this blog. I've just now noticed that each time I comment at Oz Conservative, Blogger insists that I "Choose an Identity." I guess I'm more like Lady Gaga than I thought!

  4. Cheer, cheer the Red and the White!! I am a very proud Swans supporter today.

Deveny is upset that there are male-only spaces in our culture in which masculine traits in men are acknowledged The liberalism that is applied openly in politics, culture and the workplace is not embraced on the football field. Even the PM is a Footscray-following feminist.

No current top-level footballers of any code are openly gay. Those that have come out often do so at the end of their careers and stay respected precisely because they were tough competitors and not in the slightest bit effeminate or camp.

Male competitive sport is a good example of an 'unprincipled exception' to liberalism.

But I remember reading a news piece recently about an openly gay amateur Aussie-Rules player who is campaigning for a designated "[Gay]Pride Round" in the AFL to go with the present indigenous and multicultural rounds...

  5. Deveny has penis envy. She knows that 100,000 people will never show up at a stadium to watch women do anything in the sporting arena. The only way women get noticed at a match like that is by running naked onto the ground, as one female famously did years ago, or by bitching about the boys, as Deveny did today.

  6. GP, congratulations! It was a close and entertaining match (I was a bit proud that four players in your team are from my old high school).

Yes, well put. It doesn't help that left-liberals believe that masculinity is socially constructed to oppress women/society at large.

Perhaps that's one reason why the left has generally been hostile to male only spaces in society: they have been looked on negatively as places where men might organise for the oppression of women (rather than as places where a positive masculine culture might be instilled or transmitted).

each time I comment at Oz Conservative, Blogger insists that I "Choose an Identity."

Could be worse. You might be asked to flexibly renogotiate a fluid and multiple sense of self.

  7. None of them open sodomites.....Deveny & other such pieces of filth are members of satan who harbour a malignant hatred of every good & decent thing. They want everything to be utterly depraved, vile, worthless, just as they themselves are.

  8. "Men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men, men and none openly gay."

Funny thing is, I could have posted the *exact same thing*, and the meaning would have been entirely different.

    Wait... that's a bad thing?

"She knows that 100,000 people will never show up at a stadium to watch women do anything in the sporting arena."

Depends how skimpy their outfits are!

  11. Nothing inspires as much hate in a university educated, publicly employed feminist as competitive male sport.

The Marxist in them deplores the wastage of resources in competition. The Feminist harpy in them despises the fact that men are competing in an arena where women simply cannot match them and being rewarded handsomely.

More than anything else the middle class snob in them hates the fact that the racist, sexist, redneck, white trash, bogans which they spend so much of their lives denigrating in order to more firmly support their own pedestal of cultural righteousness have a moment in which societies eyes are turned on them with a passion that no poetry reading can even evoke.

Ultimately, the hatred for popular male sport amongst the self proclaimed Avant-Garde is a manifestation of snobbish jealousy.

Interestingly the women who show up at female sporting events such as Netball and support them with great gusto are uniformly anti-feminist or sometimes apolitical lesbians.

The fact that the upper middle class literati despise male sport for being male, yet could not be bothered supporting female sport as a counter-balance speaks volumes.

  12. James, good comment. This phenomeonon I know all too well:
